Defensive driving is a poor term, it suggests you are always on edge, not calm and apprehensive. We call our Defensive Driving courses Proactive Driver, as that is the goal, to be in control of how you manage the driving environment, not reacting to what has already happened.
The Total Driver “Proactive Driver” program focuses on how to manage the intake of information, so the driver can see. To do this our course structure projects from the following
Postural Stability – By making the driver part of the car, we control their apprehension and adrenaline, this changes how their eyes work, the information they see and most importantly, calculates the decision making process.
Muscle memory and control – Controlled relaxation assists the eyes in seeing the big picture and this allows them to “Buy Time” as you are aware, when driving, time is a precious commodity, allowing time to process what they are seeing, make good decisions early and have time to implement their decisions.
Vehicle Control – How to use the car to do the work, understanding of what vehicle control really is and how to interpret the information the vehicle is constantly feeding on how the conditions are changing. We are always being told to drive to the conditions, but this is never explained, let alone taught.
Research suggests that people who participate in Defensive or Advanced Driving Courses have a higher accident rate post course than pre. This is despite Prof Ian Glendon from Griffith University showing that less than 3% of all programs research was conducted from an evidence-based approach. So where is this all going wrong?
In simple terms, programs that project from a baseline of loss of control, believe that to be a safer driver, you need to be able to control loss of control, understeer, oversteer, brake lockups etc.
The problem is the average driver never realises how they got that far into trouble, let alone understand how to rectify the very situation they created. So the course content is misplaced, you cannot teach someone how to control, what they deliberately lost control off.
