Khanacross (Learner and P-Plate Drivers)

June 12, 2022

$149
Khanacross, Advanced driving for learner drivers

Khanacross is a controlled environment, off public roads and facilitated by experience, qualified people with a demonstrated history of running events, partnering with Gold Coast Tweed Motorsport Clubs. Although the results are determined by the use of a stopwatch, this is not a high speed event. We use the watch and timing to demonstrate the improvement in driver skill and technique.

Khanacross location

The events are in a grass paddock on Tamborine Mountain. A controlled environment, where the surface enables students to get a feel for how a car moves around as the grip and other variables change. Road Safety always talks about “Driving to the conditions, but not once are learner drivers outside of Total Driver programs taught what this means or feels like. It is a course, direction changes with arrows that gives both student and instructor tools to improve vision, hand eye coordination skills, use of controls, braking and accelerator and puts fun back into driving again, in a controlled safe environment.

It is remarkable that we generally throw a few of the basics at Novice drivers and then let them go on to discover the rest for themselves. When of course they get it wrong, we throw the book at them for making a mistake” – Frank Gardner OAM

Participants

Everyone, from students who have never driven on the road before, to experienced rally and motorport professionals who want to practice and refine their skills. The events are well controlled, only one car on the course at a time and use Motorsport Australia insurance. Total Driver partner with Gold Coast Tweed Motorsport club in the operation and facilitation of these events. These are great events for our NDIS clients as well. It brings a social aspect into their driving, and enables us to introduce new elements to build skill and confidence, before it happens for a first time on a public road. The environment is positive, reinforcing achievement and progress. It is supportive where we teach them to quickly move forward from a mistake and keep driving.

For those who work with special needs, you will understand why this is such an important skill for them to master. They also learn the discipline that goes into not only driving, but also competitive driving. Watching and learning from people who have run state and national events as they apply and enforce the safety aspect behind everything.

The question we ask all supervisors:

“Will you bet your child’s life you have the skills to teach the art of driving?”
